Behcet's disease

Behcet's (pronounced Betjets) syndrome (sometimes known as Behcet's disease) is a chronic condition caused by disturbances in the body's immune system. It is named after Hulushi Behcet (1889-1948), a Turkish dermatologist and scientist, who first recognised the syndrome in one of his patients in 1924. Although Behcet's disease can affect people of any age, it most commonly affects those between the ages of 20 and 40. Common symptoms include mouth ulcers, genital ulcers, eye inflammation and arthritis. More

Behcet's Syndrome Society

Caring for those with a rare, complex and lifelong disease

Welcome to the website of the Behcet's Syndrome Society (registered charity number 326679), the official UK patient support group for people with Behcet's disease. The terms Behcet's Syndrome and Behcet's Disease are used interchangeably on this site, but refer to the same condition.

The Society was formed in 1983 by Behcet's patient Judith Buckle (1950-1997) to whom we are eternally grateful. We have expanded our work in that 25 year period, and now aim to be the voice for Behcet's patients in the UK. We have over 500 active members. More
